Martha’s Vineyard Times The arrival of herring in Vineyard waters may never rival the famed return of the swallows to Capistrano, but the herrings’ return to their natal waters is the first sign of an Island spring and a harbinger of the striped bass and bluefish that will follow. The spring herring run was once a staple of Island life as herring returned from the sea to spawn in freshwater pools. Numerous herring runs once surrounded the Island providing a natural bounty for the Vineyard’s mostly farming and fishing community. |
